Befriendswith Ltd (“Chitchat”, “we”) uses cookies and similar technologies (“Cookies”) on our website, www.chitchat.gg, and in the Chitchat web apps at app.chitchat.gg and video.chitchat.gg. This policy explains what they are, which ones we use, and how you can control them.
What is a cookie?
A cookie is a small file that a website stores in your browser. Your browser’s local storage and session storage work in a similar way, and this policy treats them as Cookies too.
Cookies don’t tell us your name. They let a site recognise the browser or device you use, remember your settings, and keep you signed in.
You can accept or refuse non-essential Cookies at any time:
- in the cookie banner, shown when you first visit from the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, or when we can’t tell where you are;
- under Cookie settings at the bottom of our website, Settings › Privacy › Analytics cookies on app.chitchat.gg, or Settings › Analytics cookies on video.chitchat.gg;
- in your browser, as described in How can I refuse cookies in my browser? below.
Your choice applies to our website and both apps in the same browser. If you have any questions, contact us at [email protected].
Which cookies do we use?
Necessary
These are needed for Chitchat to work, so they are always on.
| Name | Set by | Purpose | Kept for |
|---|---|---|---|
cc_consent | Chitchat | Remembers your cookie choice | 6 months |
__Secure-text-session, token | Chitchat | Keep you signed in to the app | 1 year |
| Local storage | Chitchat | Remembers your app settings and drafts | Until you clear your browser data |
| Session storage | Chitchat | Keeps the state of the page you are on | Until you close the tab |
| hCaptcha | Intuition Machines | Checks that a person, not a bot, is logging in or signing up (see our Privacy Policy) | Set by hCaptcha |
Analytics
In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, or when we can’t tell where you are, these are used only if you accept them. Elsewhere they are on unless you turn them off.
| Name | Set by | Purpose | Kept for |
|---|---|---|---|
_pk_id.* | Chitchat (Matomo) | Recognises your browser across visits, to measure our audience | 13 months |
_pk_ses.* | Chitchat (Matomo) | Groups the pages you view in one visit | 30 minutes |
_pk_ref.* | Chitchat (Matomo) | Remembers which site sent you to us | 6 months |
ph_*_posthog (cookie and local storage) | Chitchat (PostHog) | Links your use of our apps to your account, so we can improve Chitchat | 1 year, or until you withdraw consent |
We run Matomo and PostHog on our own servers. If you click Reject all, or don’t answer the banner where it is shown, we still count visits and errors, but nothing is stored on your device for analytics. If you withdraw consent later, we delete these Cookies from your browser: Matomo’s straight away, and the apps’ cookie and local storage the next time an app is open.
We don’t use advertising or marketing cookies. When you sign in with Google, Apple or Facebook, or pay through our payment provider, those services may set their own cookies under their own policies.
How can I refuse cookies in my browser?
Most browsers accept cookies by default. You can set your browser to block cookies, delete them, or ask you before a site stores one. If you block necessary cookies, you won’t be able to sign in to the app.
Follow the instructions for your browser:
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when the Cookies we use change. The date at the top shows when it last changed.
For more on how we process your data, see our Privacy Policy.
