Not Gonna Lie, Online Friends Saved Me This Year: A Personal Story

Not Gonna Lie, Online Friends Saved Me This Year: A Personal Story

This wasn’t the easiest year. Whether it was stress, burnout, loneliness, or just the quiet kind of overwhelm that creeps in without warning, I felt it, and I know I wasn’t the only one. But through it all, one unexpected thing got me through: my online friends.

Not gonna lie, they saved me.

They Were There When No One Else Was

There were moments I didn’t want to talk to anyone I knew in “real life.” I didn’t want explanations, expectations, or even questions. I just wanted someone to sit with me in the silence, or distract me with a story, or laugh at something stupid with no context. And that’s exactly what my online friends did.

They didn’t need a reason to show up, they just did.

Conversations That Weren’t Small Talk

What surprised me most was how deep the conversations got. One minute we were talking about our favorite snacks, the next we were unpacking anxiety, heartbreak, imposter syndrome, or big dreams. There’s something about talking to someone you met online, someone with no preconceived version of you, that makes it easier to be honest.

No pressure, just presence.

Different Places, Same Heart

Some of my closest connections this year came from people living across the globe. We were in different time zones, on different schedules, in completely different stages of life. But we clicked. Because connection isn’t about proximity, it’s about resonance.

And these people? They got me.

They Checked In. They Listened. They Cared.

When I disappeared for a bit, they noticed. When I vented, they held space. When I needed to laugh, they sent memes. These weren’t surface-level “likes” or half-hearted DMs. These were real humans showing up in meaningful ways, even from behind a screen.

The Friendship Was Real, Even If We Never Met IRL

We might not have hugged or shared a meal, but the support was real. The empathy was real. The impact was real. Anyone who says online friendships aren’t “real” just hasn’t had the right one yet.

Final Thought

This year didn’t go the way I planned. A lot of things fell apart. But somewhere in the middle of it all, I found unexpected anchors. People who reminded me that I wasn’t alone. People who made me feel seen, even on the worst days.

If you’ve made a connection online that’s gotten you through hard times, hold onto it. That’s not just the internet working, it’s humanity shining through.
